CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Dividing the continent of Gillinera like a boney spine, the Torenjie Mountains lifted majestically toward the sky with snow-drenched peaks. Deep within their rocky embrace was a sweeping valley speckled with villages and small farms. At the farthest point in the north stood a beautiful multi-winged building of white stone capped with a majestic glass dome.

The Library of Life and Death.

Thella watched as Petor Garinsith’s helicopter piloted itself in preparation to land at the center of a large courtyard at the back of the building. It was bad enough that she was now in the hands of a man her husband did not fully trust. Witnessing the full extent of his power only increased her unease.

She peered out at men and women dressed in the same green uniforms as the Mutilators she already knew. A group of them came running to welcome the Master Keeper of Wisdom home. Weak and weary from the ordeal of escaping Empire Tower, she did not protest at the help offered upon exiting the vehicle.

A stretcher was brought for Kerra, who was pale and slept fitfully. Tana and Len were lowered down beside their mother. Thella gripped their hands tightly and stood close to Riker, feeling safer near the Enforcer despite his anxious expression.

“Welcome,” Garinsith said absently, his tone cold. “Kevie will escort you to the guest quarters. You may remain here until your daughter is healed. We’ll decide what to do with you after that once the time is closer at hand.” He walked away, clearly not caring to exchange pleasantries. Tyn and Lethel hurried after him.

Thella glanced toward Kevie, who smiled weakly. “I’ll show you the way,” he said and began to walk.

Grateful for his assistance, Thella and her children followed with Riker staying a step behind. The courtyard was busy with activity in the form of training exercises or snow removal. She was acutely aware of the Mutilators who stopped to watch the newcomers pass. Thella lowered her eyes, feeling embarrassed, and was glad when they at last entered the main building.

She instantly understood why the Master Keeper called his compound a library. The walls were lined with massive shelves, stretching from floor to ceiling, and filled with more books than she ever thought existed in the world. Not only was the place impressive in the vast amount of knowledge it contained, but in the beauty of the architecture and decor. It was not what she expected of the old man and his soldiers.

The wood of the floor and shelving was richly varnished and shone in the soft lighting. The ceilings were painted to resemble blue skies with such expertise they appeared real. If she hadn’t known the sky outside was heavy with clouds, she would have thought they were skylights instead of works of art.

“This way,” Kevie said.

He guided them through a labyrinth of corridors into the vast central chamber where the crystal dome sparkled above them. Beside her, Tana and Len craned their necks in amazement. The Queen felt as if she were a child herself in the sheer size of the room.
